How to spot a fake Apple watch

Think you might be buying a fake Apple watch?

Unfortunately, the market is full of cheap copies, with some models getting closer to the real thing than others. But the good news is, there are several major tell-tale signs to look out for.

Here we offer our top tips on how to spot the counterfeits – before you hand over your money.

6 tell-tale signs of a fake Apple watch

1. Appearance

Apple’s attention to detail is second-to-none. All products have the same high-quality construction and are exceptionally consistent in terms of their look, feel and build. Therefore, one of the easiest ways to spot a fake, is to compare it with official photographs from Apple’s website.

Does it look obviously different? Is it presented in an unusual box? If so, you’re right to be wary.

2. Size

The dimensions of a real Apple watch include:

  • 6 x 33.3 x 10.5mm (for the smaller 38mm model)
  • 0 x 35.9 x 10.5 mm (for the larger 42mm model)

It’s incredibly difficult to match Apple’s engineering capabilities. And, as a result, you’ll find that most Apple watch clones are significantly bigger, bulkier and heavier than the real thing.

3. Controls

All watches in the Apple range are controlled by a digital crown dial and a long, flat button. These should be on the same side of the design, and if not, the chances are you’re buying a fake.

4. Back panel

To spot a fake Apple watch, flip it over and examine the back panel very carefully.

Genuine products have a very distinctive design – with four heart sensors (arranged in a unique diamond-shaped pattern), two strap-release buttons, a microphone aperture and speakers. You should also see a ring of specification text, detailing the size, series, colour and much more.

By contrast, copies often have a completely different design or none of these features at all. You may even find spelling mistakes or errors in the text, so be sure to look very closely.

5. Charger

The charger is also a big giveaway.

Apple watches come with a small induction charger pod. The charger attaches to the watch magnetically and is connected via USB to a wall plug with unfolding prongs. Fakes, however, are often supplied with an unofficial charging device – which connects differently or simply doesn’t work.

6. Apple watch straps

Lastly, you should be able to detach your original watch strap and replace it with a new one. Most Apple watch copies don’t have this ability. They just come with one basic strap that can’t be changed. Therefore, this is another big red flag to help you separate the fakes from the genuine.

Such ‘interchangeability’ is one of the device’s main advantages – allowing you to wear a different band for different activities. And, here at Apple Watch Straps UK, we have a diverse range of styles and designs to choose from – including leather bands, luxury bands, rubber bands and more.

We’ll openly admit, our watch bands are not official Apple products. But they’re still excellent quality, available for an affordable price and compatible with all variants of Apple Watch. So, once you’ve ditched the counterfeits and bagged yourself a real Apple Watch, why not head back to our online store? See what we have to offer and we promise you won’t be disappointed.
