A closer look at the Apple Watch Series 6

On the 15th September, Apple launched two new smartwatches – the Series 6 and the SE.

This fresh line up is intended to reach more people than ever before. And whilst both models are said to be an improvement on the Series 5, it’s the Apple Watch Series 6 that is firmly in the spotlight. Dubbed the most advanced watch to date, it’s packed full of new, exciting and ground-breaking features.

Here we take a closer look at exactly what it has to offer.

What’s new?

The Apple Watch Series 6 comes with all the same high-tech features as the Series 5, including an ECG app, fall detection, international emergency calling, irregular heart rhythm notifications etc. But it’s also been updated and boasts several new features:

1. Apple S6 chip

Series 6 boasts an S6 SiP (System in Package) chip, with a 64-bit dual-core processor. As such, it’s 20% faster than the Series 5 – whilst still offering the same generous 18-hour battery life.

2. watchOS 7

Installed with the new watchOS 7, Series 6 allows family members without an iPhone to use an Apple Watch (e.g. children, elderly relatives). It also benefits from new fitness workouts, an in-built sleep tracking app and a ‘handwashing’ facility, which detects when you’re washing your hands and starts a 20-second timer.

3. Blood oxygen (SpO2) monitoring

This is (arguably) the most interesting of all new features.

The Apple Watch Series 6 has a blood oxygen sensor in the back crystal, which is made up of four LED clusters and four photodiodes. Working in tandem with the blood oxygen app, this sensor can take on-demand readings of your blood oxygen level, as well as background readings – day and night.

4. A brighter display

The always-on retina display is now 2.5 times brighter when outdoors. Even if your wrist is facing down and the sun is shining bright, all information and metrics can be easily seen. There’s also no need to wake your watch for simple interactions. Simply swipe up and down as you please.

5. New watch faces

You can now choose from more watch faces than ever before. Personalise them to match your mood, or display only the information that matters to you the most. It’s up to you. Whether you’re a fitness fanatic, a weather nerd, a photographer, or just like to plan ahead, there’s a face for that.

6. Colours

Aside from the standard colours (i.e. silver, space grey, gold), Series 6 also comes in red and blue. You can also choose from three materials: titanium, stainless steel, or 100% recycled aluminium.
